Our highlighted educational topic this month is pulmonary/lung
UF-Jax EMUS enjoyed a few beers at Southern Swells while discussing the following articles earlier this month:
Pang PS, Russell FM, Ehrman R, Ferre R, Gargani L, Levy PD, Noble V, Lane KA, Li X, Collins SP. Lung Ultrasound-Guided Emergency Department Management of Acute Heart Failure (BLUSHED-AHF): A Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial. JACC Heart Fail. 2021 Sep;9(9):638-648. doi: 10.1016/j.jchf.2021.05.008. Epub 2021 Jul 7. PMID: 34246609; PMCID: PMC8419011.
Vieillard-Baron A, Chergui K, Rabiller A, Peyrouset O, Page B, Beauchet A, Jardin F. Superior vena caval collapsibility as a gauge of volume status in ventilated septic patients. Intensive Care Med. 2004 Sep;30(9):1734-9. doi: 10.1007/s00134-004-2361-y. Epub 2004 Jun 26. PMID: 15375649.
Probing the Literature: ACEP/SAEM Ultrasound Journal Club also had a pulmonary focus this month with author Dr. Nicole Duggan for the first article. It was fascinating to listen to her thoughts on her research and the lessons she learned/improvements she would have made to the protocol in retrospect. Several points to think about:
What is the best transducer to utilize to visualize B-lines?
Are there any changes to the setting that could improve your image quality?
